Description

Marvin's Mittens is a 2D platformer with a focus on exploration and collection. With gorgeous, hand drawn art, Marvin presents a soothing world to explore, free from enemies and danger. Collect magic snowflakes to increase your jump height and race your sled across the landscape to reach new areas before your mother calls you back home. Learn the secrets of snow elf magic and traverse the world beyond Marvin's backyard to solve the mystery of the missing mitten. Immerse yourself in this charming indie title!

The game is distinctly Canadian in its setting and tone. Inspired by our experiences as children of a northern climate, the team tried to capture the feeling of childhood wonder we all felt when outdoors in the winter. There’s a mixture of imagination, exploration, and on some level what it’s really like to be a kid bundled up in a snowsuit, out in a snow covered landscape, with a toboggan to keep you company.

It’s also a bit of an experiment in terms of player engagement. We wanted to create a game without combat, enemies and environmental hazards. We hope we still have plenty to do to keep players wanting more, but the game is very focused on a smaller, simpler set of actions. It’s very serene, meant to be relaxing to play. There are challenges, and you do have a time limit of sorts (you leave your house in the afternoon, see the transition from sunset to evening, and then your mom calls you back home for bed), but it’s not a tense experience.

More whimsical features include Snow Elves who impart the magical ability to leap incredibly high, collection of magic snowflakes which further augment this ability, and of course the mystery of who or what stole your mitten at the beginning of the game.

If you’d like to know more, we’re always happy to talk about our game.

History

Marvin’s Mittens is a videogame that has been developed locally over the last five years. The Breakfall development team started small, but recruited additional members as the project grew. While there is a mixture of experience in the Ottawa game industry, much of the team’s art muscle was recruited from Algonquin College’s Game Dev program, at their end of year expo.

Awards & Recognition

  • "...Marvin's Mittens, which looks like a game and quacks like a game but by rejecting dogmas about goals and score is instead an experiential art piece which beautifully captures nostalgic childhood memories of playing in the snow" Randy Smith, Edge Magazine 225

About Breakfall

Boilerplate
We're a group of independent game developers who want to create new and exciting interactive works. We are guided by the principle that independent developers are free to be daring in design, and sometimes being simple is daring. Armed with nostalgia for the games of yore and a sense of amazement at the tools available to indie developers nowadays, we're hoping to make something unmistakably crafted by, and for, love of the game. We hope to inspire other independent developers, just as we've been inspired by the output of other individuals and small groups.
